Making the decision never seems to be difficult for me, it’s generally the easy part.
Things could go completely wrong, I could get mugged, I could meet the wrong people, I might not meet anyone.
Thankfully, for better or worse, this type of thing doesn’t come to mind and there’s very little deliberation otherwise, I might end up never leaving the house. There’s just the idea and I run with it.
Africa
Take Africa for instance. It’s been on the agenda since I fell in love with the beauty and grace of the big cats, back when a domestic moggy was half my height. The yearly clock has ticked over a fair few times since then and the reasons driving me to get my fill of Africa have multiplied. Now, there’s also a big desire for change, the challenge of a potentially formidable new country/culture along with a basic, intrinsic need to be near water again. Oh, and the animals of course, always the animals!
Cambodia
I first came to Cambodia in January 2009. Here’s my blog site from the time on how things looked through the eyes of a complete newbie in SouthEast Asia and specifically, the experience of living life in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
New Slippers
I was in love with the place within the first week and over 7 years lived, left and returned multiple times. It’s always felt comfortable in a 2-year-old pair of slippers kind of way, but like old slippers sometimes you just want to go shopping for a new pair. To see what the options are, to try on different versions. You might find an even better pair, or you might just come back to the first, safe, easy and welcoming pair.
I’ve been doing an awful lot of research over the last couple of months, where to go – country, cities, what to do – safaris, climbing, beaches? And things have changed a lot since I first started planning, in my life as well as in the plans themselves. So as a result, I have a ticket booked to Johannesburg, South Africa. I have accommodation booked and the accommodation is coming to pick me up from the airport – that is pretty much it!
People have warned me about Jo’Burg, they’ve pretty much warned me off Africa in general – “it’s not Asia, Asia is easy”. Let’s see how we go. . . .
