A Travelers Facebook community, like all Facebook communities, are set up to function as help networks for the communities they support, be it travelers, expats, surfers, knitters the list is endless. Unfortunately, what tends to end up happening is it becomes a platform for idle people. People seeking to share with a captive audience their opinions which are in the main part are rarely positive. It provides a safety net of invisibility for people to say anything and everything that enters their head. Things which would never be uttered in the social life we’ve been used to.
As a traveler in Mozambique, I discovered a Facebook network which is nothing remotely like that mentioned above. It’s managed by an awesome administrator who doesn’t allow any nonsense and because of that, it serves the purpose it was created to provide. It’s called DriveMoz and for anyone traveling through Mozambique, it’s a must-join if you want to be kept up to date with what’s going on, on the road.
I put a post up on the site asking if anyone was driving through Xai-Xai heading up to Inhambane that would be willing to give a solo backpacker a lift. I got a couple of offers including I an offer for another lift a week later heading further up the coast.
There are a lot of South Africans living or holidaying in Mozambique which means there are a lot of them traveling up and down on a regular basis. From what I learned, DriveMozs members are made up mostly of these South Africans. And what I’ve also come to learn is that South Africans are generally very friendly helpful people.
The site was an amazing find, not only did I get to feel safe and secure in my travels, I wasn’t sandwiched in like a sardine, I got to have a natter, ask questions and learn some more about this country that I’m beginning to fall in love with . . . my next post will provide a little bit more of an insight into why.
- Look into Facebook communities such as DriveMoz to help find alternative travel options over the public transport
- Although I didn’t try it or find any other information on it there is supposedly a Post Bus that leaves from Maputo to Maxixe and then onwards to further destinations north.
- And although many people mentioned that they always see big buses (as opposed to the mini-van chappas) traveling Mozambique, no one had any knowledge to impart on how to actually get one’s butt on one.
